Ivan Rakitić, one of Croatia’s greatest footballers of the modern era, could not hold back his emotions after Hajduk Split’s league match against Rijeka. Croatian media have confirmed that it was his final appearance at Poljud—and the penultimate match of his career.
The 36-year-old broke down in tears at full time, aware that his return to Croatian football is nearing its end. After a glittering club and international career, Rakitić will hang up his boots following Hajduk’s final match of the season.
He joined Hajduk Split last summer after a stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab. His arrival was celebrated as a major homecoming, bringing one of Croatia’s most decorated players back to where his heart always belonged.
Rakitić began his professional career at FC Basel in Switzerland before rising to prominence with Schalke 04 and later becoming a fan favourite at Sevilla. However, his biggest success came during his six-year spell at Barcelona, where he won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, and the 2015 UEFA Champions League.
On the international stage, Rakitić earned 106 caps for Croatia and was instrumental in the country’s run to the 2018 World Cup final in Russia, where they finished as runners-up. He retired from international football in 2019.
His final professional match is expected to take place next weekend. After a career filled with trophies, unforgettable goals, and unmatched passion for the Croatian shirt, Rakitić is preparing to say goodbye—on his own terms, and at home.
