Jamal Musiala has taken a major step towards his return to competitive football after rejoining Bayern Munich training for the first time since suffering a serious injury.

The 22-year-old Germany international appeared on the training pitch on Tuesday morning, exactly 164 days after being sidelined, and took part in a partial session with the first team.

Musiala broke his fibula during Bayern’s Club World Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and has been absent from all competitive action since.

His return was marked by a symbolic moment, as team-mates formed a guard of honour to welcome him back at the start of the session.

While Musiala is not yet ready for match action or full-intensity workloads, he completed part of the team programme before continuing with his individual rehabilitation.

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany had already hinted last week that the midfielder’s return was close.

“Jamal is close. I hope he will do a few more training sessions with the team before Christmas,” Kompany said ahead of the league match against Mainz. “That would be important for both him and the team. It would be ideal if he got his first minutes in January.”

Bayern are now entering the final training week of the year. Before the winter break, they face an away match against Heidenheim, after which Musiala will have valuable time to continue building fitness.

The expectation inside the club is that the January period will mark the final phase of his comeback.

Musiala remains central to Bayern’s long-term plans. Alongside Michael Olise and teenage sensation Lennart Karl, he is viewed as part of the attacking core that will shape the club’s future.

During Musiala’s absence, 17-year-old Karl has developed rapidly and is already considered one of the most exciting talents of his age group, while Olise, 24, continues to mature after his arrival.

Despite being just 22, Musiala is already one of Bayern’s most experienced players, having made 207 official appearances for the club.

Across those games, he has scored 64 goals and provided 39 assists, underlining his importance to Bayern’s present and future.

In February, following lengthy negotiations, Musiala signed a new contract running until 2030, securing his long-term future at the Allianz Arena.

Now back on the training pitch, the final countdown to his long-awaited return has begun.
