James McClean paid tribute to Wrexham’s incredible achievement after the club secured a third consecutive promotion under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham captain James McClean has praised the Red Dragons after the club made history, securing a third consecutive promotion to reach the Championship.
Just five years ago, Wrexham were a small, fan-owned club playing in the fifth tier of English football. That changed dramatically in 2020 when Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over, with their journey captured in the hit series Welcome to Wrexham.
After a couple of slow-building seasons, the Red Dragons gained promotion to League Two in 2023, bolstered by major signings, including James McClean from Wigan Athletic. They secured a second straight promotion the same year — and on Saturday evening, they completed a historic feat by clinching a third consecutive promotion, booking their place in the Championship.
McClean, who was named captain last year, took to Instagram to celebrate the achievement. Posting a photo of Wrexham’s celebrations, he wrote: "First club to ever do 3 promotions back-to-back, what an achievement, what a group to be part of and honestly what a bloody club. Them history-making Red Dragons."
The Premier League dream edges closer:
Reynolds and McElhenney’s dream of seeing Wrexham in the Premier League is now within reach. One more promotion would see the Red Dragons enter England’s top flight — but first, they must navigate the fierce challenge of the Championship, widely regarded as one of the toughest divisions in world football.
