James Milner shared a heartfelt message after making his Anfield return with Brighton, wearing the late Diogo Jota’s number 20 shirt in an emotional Premier League reunion.
James Milner has paid a touching tribute to the late Diogo Jota following his return to Anfield during Brighton’s Premier League clash with Liverpool. The 39-year-old midfielder received a warm standing ovation from the home crowd as he came off the bench late in the second half, wearing the No. 20 shirt once donned by his former team-mate.
Milner, who spent eight successful years at Liverpool between 2015 and 2023, was visibly moved by the reception. His introduction carried extra emotional weight, as Jota tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain last July, alongside his brother André Silva.
After the match, Milner took to Instagram to express his gratitude and pay tribute to the Portuguese forward: “Disappointing result but happy to be back out on the pitch and a special moment to play at Anfield wearing the #20. A massive thank you for the incredible welcome from the Anfield crowd. YNWA.”
He also sent a message to Brighton fans, adding: “To the travelling fans for your continued support — we need you with us over this period.”
Earlier this year, after Jota’s passing, Milner had written on X: “Devastated for the loss of Diogo and André. Loved sharing a dressing room with him, having so many laughs together and marvelling at what he did on the pitch. Rest in peace, Jots. Love ya, mate. YNWA.”
On the pitch, Liverpool claimed a 2-0 victory over Brighton, thanks to a brace from Hugo Ekitike. Mohamed Salah made his return as a substitute, while manager Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience: “For the first time in weeks, we had a bit of luck today. Maybe we deserved it because of our mentality.”
Next weekend, Liverpool travel to face Tottenham, while Brighton host Sunderland — and for Milner, the memory of his Anfield return will remain one of deep emotion and respect.
