James Rodriguez revealed a humorous but telling story about training under Niko Kovač during his second season at Bayern.

Looking back today, James Rodriguez’s move to Bayern Munich should have worked much longer than it did.

The Colombian arrived in Germany in 2017 carrying expectations but also looking for something important after difficult moments at Real Madrid, regular football and a coach who trusted him. Both conditions were waiting for him in Munich.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted him.

That mattered.

Throughout James’ career, Ancelotti repeatedly became the coach who restored his confidence whenever his position weakened. Madrid had become complicated, opportunities were becoming smaller and Bayern offered a clean restart under a manager who already knew exactly how to use him.

The beginning justified the decision.

James quickly became an important player, produced strong performances and looked comfortable in Bayern’s attacking structure. The team won trophies, his football became expressive again and there was a growing feeling that Germany could become his long-term home.

Then the atmosphere changed.

After the 2018 World Cup, Bayern changed direction and appointed Niko Kovač.

James never described the relationship as conflict.

He described it as incompatibility.

"In the second year, Kovač came. Every coach has their own preferences and I was clearly not one of them."

That change was visible both on and off the pitch.

The Colombian suddenly found himself in a completely different environment, one built less around freedom and more around physical demands, structure and repetition.

Now, speaking in a documentary for Netflix, James shared a story that captures the difference between their football philosophies better than any tactical explanation.

Kovač reportedly liked players to stay after training and complete another thirty minutes on stationary bikes.

James could not understand the point.

"He liked it when players cycled for 30 minutes after training. And I said to him: 'What is this now? Am I in the Tour de France or something? I'm a football player.'"

The line is funny, but it also reveals something about James.

He always saw himself primarily as a technical footballer, someone whose game depended on touch, intelligence and creativity. Endless physical routines were never naturally part of his football identity.

His adaptation outside football did not become easier either.

Bayern organised German lessons to help him integrate into life in Munich, but that project did not last long.

James admitted it with unusual honesty.

"I couldn't get it into my head. I fell asleep. In the end I told them, 'I don't want to learn.'"

His Bayern period eventually closed after two seasons.

He returned to Real Madrid and later reunited once again with Ancelotti at Everton, continuing a coach-player connection that followed him through several stages of his career.

Years later, James still speaks positively about Bayern.

But this story makes one thing clear.

Sometimes success at the highest level is not about quality.

Sometimes it is simply about finding the right coach.
