James Carragher, son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, is set to embark on his international career—but not with England. Instead, the Wigan Athletic defender is preparing to represent Malta after recently acquiring his Maltese passport.

The 22-year-old has been a regular for Wigan in League One this season, making 22 league appearances, scoring one goal, and providing one assist. He has also played in seven cup matches, further proving his potential.

Carragher was part of Liverpool’s youth system before joining Wigan in 2017. Now, he hopes to take the next step internationally with Malta, a team that has already expressed interest in calling him up.

Although England boss Thomas Tuchel had no plans to include him in his squad, Carragher qualifies for Malta through his grandfather, who was born there. His father, Jamie Carragher, also holds a Maltese passport.

Malta is expected to finalize his call-up soon, potentially handing him his debut in this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Poland.

Malta’s squad is modest, with its biggest star being 31-year-old Teddy Teuma of Reims, alongside Ilyas Chouaref, who plays for Sion. Carragher’s addition could bring much-needed defensive reinforcement to the team.
