In a thrilling Champions League round of 16 encounter, Atletico Madrid secured their place among the elite eight, thanks to a standout performance from Jan Oblak, especially during the penalty shootout, against Inter Milan.
Oblak's heroics between the posts were pivotal in the high-stakes match, as Atletico chased a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
The match was intense from the start, with Atletico applying heavy pressure and dominating possession, creating numerous opportunities but failing to convert. Their efforts seemed to be in vain when Inter's Federico Dimarco broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, sending the Italian fans into a frenzy. However, Atletico responded immediately, leveling the score two minutes later through Antoine Griezmann after a chaotic sequence in Inter's defense.
The second half saw Atletico continue their offensive, with close calls from Griezmann and a solo attempt by Alvaro Morata that missed the mark. Despite their dominance, Atletico couldn't find the back of the net again within regulation time, taking the game to extra time at 2-1, thanks to a late goal from substitute Memphis Depay.
The extra time periods were fraught with missed opportunities and a defensive masterclass from both sides, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the quarterfinalist. Oblak shone brightest, saving penalties from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, cementing Atletico's advancement and his place as the night's hero.
