FIFA's list of the top 10 goalkeepers for 2023 sparks controversy as Jan Oblak is snubbed, with surprising inclusions like South Africa's Ronwen Williams.
FIFA has revealed its top 10 goalkeeper nominees for the Best Goalkeeper of the Year award, but the list has left many football fans scratching their heads. Among the most shocking omissions is Jan Oblak, one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the world and a key player for Atletico Madrid. Oblak’s stellar performances, including a strong showing at the European Championships, were not enough to earn him a spot on the shortlist.
While the list includes expected names such as Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez (Argentina), Ederson (Manchester City), and the rising star Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia), it also features some surprising inclusions. Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid), who is largely a backup goalkeeper, and Ronwen Williams, the South African international and player for Mamelodi Sundowns, are among those who made the cut ahead of Oblak.
Other nominees include Yassine Bounou (Al Hilal), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), David Raya (Arsenal), Unai Simón (Athletic Bilbao), and Yann Sommer (Inter). Williams’ inclusion, in particular, has raised eyebrows, as he plays in a much less competitive league compared to the others on the list.
For many, the omission of Oblak, who has been a cornerstone of Atletico Madrid’s success for years, raises questions about FIFA's criteria for the award. This follows another controversy earlier this year when France Football awarded its Yashin Trophy for the world’s best goalkeeper to Emiliano Martinez, a decision also debated by fans and analysts.
As the debate continues, Oblak’s absence from the list highlights the subjective and often controversial nature of individual awards in football.
