Veteran defender Jonny Evans has officially retired, closing the chapter on a career that included Premier League glory and over 100 caps for Northern Ireland.
Jonny Evans has announced his retirement from professional football, just days after leaving Manchester United for the second and final time. The 37-year-old centre-back, known for his composure and tactical intelligence, ends a career that spanned over two decades at the top of the game.
A product of United's academy, Evans made 241 appearances for the club across two stints, first from 2006 to 2015, then returning in 2023 to offer depth and experience. He played a key role during the club’s dominant era under Sir Alex Ferguson.
His trophy cabinet includes three Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Club World Cup, two FA Cups, and two League Cups. After his initial United departure, Evans played for West Bromwich Albion and later became a mainstay at Leicester City, where he earned praise for his leadership and reliability.
Evans was also a cornerstone of the Northern Ireland national team, earning 107 caps and frequently serving as captain. He made his international debut in 2006 and featured in six matches against Slovenia, winning once, making him a familiar opponent to Slovenian fans.
Known for his strong positional play, calmness under pressure, and two-footed ability, Evans embodied the so-called 'United DNA' throughout his career. His last international appearance came in a 5-1 defeat to Spain in 2023, bringing to a close a storied national team journey.
