Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery after suffering a freak injury during England's celebrations following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico, with his father revealing the midfielder "completely smashed" his left forearm.

The 36-year-old was stretchered off and given oxygen after falling over the advertising boards during the post-match celebrations at the Azteca Stadium, moments after England secured their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Although Henderson did not play in the match, he joined his teammates and supporters on the touchline after the final whistle before the unfortunate accident abruptly ended his tournament.

England returned to their training base in Kansas City, while Henderson remained in Mexico City to undergo surgery on his injured arm.

His father, Brian Henderson, confirmed that the former Liverpool captain will stay with the England squad despite being ruled out of the remainder of the competition.

"It's his left forearm. He's just completely smashed it," Brian Henderson told the Daily Mail.

"He's going to have a cast on, and then it depends on what the specialists say. He won't be leaving his teammates. He'll be there until it's finished."

Watching the match from England, Henderson's father initially believed his son had suffered only a minor fall.

"I had no idea it was that serious until they were interviewing Harry Kane and a trolley came past with Jordan on it. I could see him there with oxygen."

"Straight away, I messaged his assistant, who was over there, to find out what had happened. I was up all night waiting for the news. Now it's a waiting game."

The incident was not shown during the live television broadcast and only became widely known as footage of England's celebrations circulated across social media.

Despite the serious injury, Henderson broke his silence with a positive message to supporters, choosing to focus on England's victory rather than his own disappointment.

"A night to remember, that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be part of this special team. Thanks for all the support. Another big one on Saturday."

In an unusual twist, Henderson was also shown a yellow card in the closing stages of the match despite remaining an unused substitute, receiving the booking while passionately celebrating from the sidelines.

England now turns its attention to a quarter-final clash with Norway, while Henderson begins his recovery alongside the squad he has pledged to support until the end of the tournament.
