Marcelo Brozović could be heading back to European football in one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window.
According to Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Real Madrid have opened talks with the representatives of the former Croatia international, who is currently a free agent after leaving Al Nassr.
The report claims that new Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho is personally driving the move and believes the experienced midfielder would add leadership and stability to the club's midfield.
Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to offer Brozović a one-year contract.
If completed, the transfer would mark a remarkable return to elite European football after three seasons in Saudi Arabia.
Madrid continues to reshape their squad following a disappointing campaign without a major trophy. The club has already strengthened with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté, Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella, while Mourinho is said to be eager to add another proven winner.
A decorated career
Brozović began his professional career with Hrvatski Dragovoljac before moving through Lokomotiva Zagreb and Dinamo Zagreb, where his performances earned him a transfer to Inter.
After joining the Italian club for around €5 million, he established himself as one of Europe's most reliable midfielders.
During seven seasons in Milan, Brozović made 330 appearances, scored 31 goals, provided 43 assists and helped Inter win five major trophies.
He joined Al Nassr in 2023 in a deal worth approximately €15.7 million. Reports suggest he earned around €25 million per season, making him the highest-paid Croatian athlete during his time in Saudi Arabia.
Across three seasons with Al Nassr, Brozović played 124 matches, scored eight goals and contributed 23 assists, while winning the Saudi Pro League alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
On the international stage, Brozović collected 99 caps for Croatia, scoring seven goals and playing a key role in the team that finished runners-up at the 2018 World Cup and claimed third place in 2022.
