Justin Cornejo, a 20-year-old goalkeeper for Barcelona SC in Guayaquil, has tragically passed away following a fall in the shower, leading to the postponement of the Copa Sudamericana match against Bragantino.
A tragic accident has deeply affected Barcelona SC from Guayaquil, which was scheduled to play against Brazil's Bragantino in the Copa Sudamericana on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
Human beings are extremely fragile, and even the smallest moment of inattention can be fatal. This was a harsh reminder from the tragic death of 20-year-old goalkeeper Justin Cornejo, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a fall in the shower early Wednesday morning, Central European Time.
The horrific incident occurred on the night between Sunday and Monday. The young Ecuadorian slipped while showering and struck his head. Although he was quickly taken to the hospital, doctors determined he had fallen into a coma with no brain activity, hinting at the worst possible outcome. Sadly, this outcome was confirmed two days later.
"There are no words or phrases that can ease the pain we feel at this moment. The memories he left behind will give us the strength to get through this together. Justin, you will forever be in our hearts. Rest in peace, friend. We love you dearly," stated Barcelona SC.
Barcelona SC was set to play a knockout match in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 playoffs against Bragantino. Due to this tragedy, the Ecuadorian club has rightly requested the match be postponed, a request that is expected to be granted.
Cornejo came up through Barcelona SC's youth academy and was promoted to the first team of the Ecuadorian top-flight club last year. He was the third-choice goalkeeper behind Javier Burrai and Víctor Mendoza, and he had played one match for Ecuador's youth national team.
