Karim Benzema admits he would consider returning to Real Madrid as his contract with Al Ittihad expires, saying everything is possible if Florentino Pérez wants him back.
Veteran French forward Karim Benzema says he is open to the idea of returning to Real Madrid, admitting that his future is undecided as his contract with Al Ittihad enters its final months.
At 37 years old, Benzema continues to score regularly and showcase his enduring quality. His move to Saudi Arabia was widely interpreted as the final chapter of his career, yet the Frenchman insists he is far from finished, following in the mindset of former teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić, who are still competing at the highest level late into their careers.
Benzema’s deal with Al Ittihad expires at the end of the season. Speaking to AS, he made it clear that retirement is not on his mind.
“My contract is running out, that’s true. I still can’t say whether I’ll leave or stay. I will soon turn 38, but I can imagine playing for another two years. Physically I feel good, I work hard and I play. I love football. We will see what happens,” Benzema said.
He also revealed that he would be willing to return to Real Madrid, provided club president Florentino Pérez wishes to bring him back.
“If Florentino is still there, it could happen. I’m still in contact with him and everything is possible. I’m a Real Madrid fan. I feel that in my soul. Madrid is my city, and I feel like a Real Madrid fan and like a Madrileño. We will see,” he added in a surprisingly open admission from a player who remains one of the club’s greatest icons.
Benzema spent an extraordinary 14 seasons at Real Madrid, making 648 appearances, the fifth-highest total in club history. With 354 goals, he is the club’s second-highest scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo. His 165 assists place him first among all Real Madrid legends to have worn the famous white shirt.
