Belgian star admits he was left stunned by City’s decision not to offer him a contract extension after ten legendary years at the club.
Kevin De Bruyne has opened up about his unexpected departure from Manchester City, revealing he was caught off guard when the club told him they had no intention of extending his contract.
After nearly a decade of excellence in sky blue, the 32-year-old midfielder—widely regarded as one of the best in Premier League history—is preparing to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season. But his farewell will come with a bitter note.
"I didn't receive any offers all season. They made the decision, which was what it was. I was surprised, but I had to accept it," De Bruyne admitted in a candid interview.
The conversation, he said, was short and one-sided.
"I told them I had a lot to offer, but they just said the decision had been made. I can’t say what led to it. It wasn’t a very long conversation," he added.
De Bruyne has contributed to over 160 goals in City colours, lifting multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the Champions League. Yet the abrupt ending clearly left him with mixed emotions.
"I was a bit shocked," he admitted. "I firmly believe I can still play at this level."
Although he's frequently been linked with a move to MLS or Saudi Arabia, De Bruyne recently dropped a hint that he's not done with English football just yet—refusing to rule out staying in the Premier League with another club.
