Kieran Trippier could return for Newcastle against Nottingham Forest as the England defender prepares for an emotional farewell.

Kieran Trippier is closing in on an emotional return to the starting lineup for Newcastle United.

The experienced full-back could start Sunday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest as he enters the final weeks of his career at St James’ Park.

Last month, Trippier confirmed he will leave Newcastle when his contract expires on June 30, ending a memorable four-and-a-half-year spell at the club.

The 35-year-old joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 and quickly became one of the most important figures of the club’s modern era.

During his time on Tyneside, Trippier made more than 150 appearances, helped Newcastle qualify twice for the Champions League, and played a major role in ending the club’s 56-year wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup last season.

Trippier has not started a match since announcing his departure, but injuries inside Eddie Howe’s squad could now open the door for his return.

Tino Livramento remains sidelined with injury concerns, while young midfielder Lewis Miley, who had recently filled in at right-back, suffered a fractured fibula during training earlier this week.

The 20-year-old travelled to see a specialist consultant and is expected to recover in time for pre-season, but his current campaign is over.

That situation leaves Trippier in line to feature at the City Ground as Newcastle continue their push for European qualification.

The Magpies currently sit 13th in the table and need a strong finish to keep their hopes alive.

Despite the emotions surrounding his exit, Trippier insists his focus remains fully on helping Newcastle end the season positively.

“You’ll get 100% from me,” Trippier said.

“I'm really attached to Newcastle. It's going to be really sad after the Fulham game but of course I'm going to follow the club, follow the manager, and I can come back whenever I can to watch the games and support the lads.”

“I just hope this club can push even further and win more silverware.”

Eddie Howe also praised the veteran defender for his professionalism and leadership during his Newcastle career.

“He's been a model of consistency, behind the scenes that will to win. He's been a really good leader, he deserves all the plaudits and we hope he finishes the season on a high,” Howe said.
