Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a move for John Stones, with Vincent Kompany keen to reunite with his former Manchester City teammate.
Bayern Munich are reportedly exploring one of the more unexpected moves of the summer transfer window, with John Stones emerging as a potential target for the German giants.
According to the Daily Mail, Bayern are closely monitoring the situation of the England defender, whose decade-long spell at Manchester City is reportedly approaching its conclusion.
Kompany pushing for reunion
The move is said to be driven in part by Vincent Kompany, who previously shared a dressing room with Stones during his time at City.
Now Bayern’s head coach, the Belgian reportedly sees an opportunity to bring the experienced defender to Munich.
Stones leaves behind a significant legacy at Manchester City. Since arriving from Everton, he has made 293 appearances, scored 19 goals, and played a key role during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Guardiola valued his versatility
Although primarily a centre-back, Pep Guardiola frequently used Stones in midfield roles because of his tactical intelligence and technical ability.
Many supporters still remember his influence during City’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2023, including his role in the final against Inter Milan, where his positional flexibility again proved crucial.
However, the last two seasons have been disrupted by injury problems, and Stones gradually lost his place as a regular starter.
Guardiola recently spoke about the defender’s situation.
“I never doubt John. When he is at his level, he is one of the best central defenders. I just want him to stay healthy,” he said.
Bayern may hold the advantage
Reports suggest Stones has also attracted interest from Everton and even Coventry City, but Bayern could offer a far more attractive sporting project.
The presence of Harry Kane may also help, with the England captain already playing a central role in the dressing room.
Bayern have also recently been linked with Anthony Gordon, reinforcing suggestions that the club could continue adding Premier League experience to Kompany’s squad.
Stones is expected to travel with England to the upcoming World Cup before making a final decision over his future.
If Bayern proceed, it could become one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the summer.
