A dramatic change of plans could result in Hull City completing another piece of late transfer business. Genoa had been preparing to sign Woyo Coulibaly from Leicester City, but the deal collapsed after the English club reportedly attempted to change the previously agreed terms.
Coulibaly had already travelled to Italy believing his transfer was effectively complete. Instead, the 26-year-old defender has been forced to return to England, where he remains with League One side Leicester City.
The breakdown has created an opportunity for Hull owner Acun Ilicali. Genoa still need a right-back and have now turned their attention towards Hull's Cody Drameh.
Drameh now heading towards Serie A
Everything indicates that the 24-year-old London-born defender could complete a move to Genoa. Drameh was only a substitute in Hull's opening two matches of the new season, making a late departure a realistic solution for all parties.
Coulibaly, meanwhile, is already familiar with Italian football after previous spells with Parma and Sassuolo, which made his proposed Genoa transfer a logical move before negotiations unexpectedly broke down.
His situation at Leicester is particularly frustrating. The former Premier League club is now competing in League One, the third tier of English football, and has failed to win any of its opening three matches ahead of tonight's meeting with Plymouth Argyle.
Leicester's wider situation remains uncertain, with the club's owners looking for a buyer and its value currently estimated at between €200m and €300m.
Despite their problems, Leicester have still invested in new players this year, including a surprising move for Admir Bristrić from Olimpija Ljubljana for a relatively significant fee.
For Coulibaly, however, the immediate reality is disappointing: he had already landed in Italy expecting to become a Genoa player, only to be sent back to England. Genoa could now complete the position with Hull City's Drameh instead.
