Leicester City loses appeal against six-point deduction for financial breaches, leaving them in the relegation zone with only five games left to save their season.
Leicester City have suffered a major setback after losing their appeal against a six-point deduction for breaching financial regulations, a decision that puts their Championship survival in serious danger.
The former Premier League champions, who stunned the football world with their title win a decade ago, now find themselves in the relegation zone, sitting one point from safety with only five matches remaining.
The sanction was imposed by an independent panel after the Premier League charged the club in May 2025 for breaching regulations during the 2023/24 season.
Following the final decision, Leicester released a statement confirming a shift in focus toward on-field matters.
"Considering that this matter has now been concluded and that there are five games left until the end of the season, everyone in the club is fully focused on the upcoming matches and on shaping the outcome of the season with the results on the field."
"We know this has been a challenging period and we thank our fans for their continued support of the teams. The onus is now on us to approach these remaining games with the focus and intent that our current situation requires."
The reasoning behind the punishment was outlined in an official statement.
"The decision of the independent panel to recommend a six-point deduction from Leicester City this season has been upheld by the independent appeals panel. The panel found that the club had breached the EFL's profit and viability rules for the period ending in the 2023/24 season."
Leicester challenged the ruling on several grounds, including the authority of the panel and the severity of the punishment.
"The club appealed the decision on a number of grounds, including the panel's powers to recommend the deduction of points and the level of the sanction. The appeals panel dismissed those objections."
The process also included a counter-appeal from the league.
"The appeals panel also dismissed the Premier League's appeal, which related solely to the panel's decision not to increase the club's fine for breaching league rules relating to the late submission of annual accounts."
With the legal battle now over, Leicester City face a clear and urgent task.
The fight for survival will be decided on the pitch, with no margin for error in the final weeks of the season.
