Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is feeling the impact of life without its former superstar trio—Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr.. Once one of the most marketable football brands globally, PSG now finds itself grappling with a significant decline in revenue from merchandise and engagement on social media.
Revenue decline at flagship store
During the Mbappe-Messi-Neymar era, PSG’s flagship store on the Champs-Élysées was a major source of income, generating around €100,000 in daily sales. However, with no superstars to attract global attention, revenue has dropped by a staggering 90%, now amounting to just €10,000 per day, according to L’Equipe.
Social media losses
PSG’s struggles extend to social media, where the club has seen a significant decline in followers. Following the departures of Messi and Neymar, the club lost 7 million Instagram followers, and the trend has continued, with 200,000 followers disappearing every month.
Sponsorship woes
The loss of superstar players has also affected PSG’s sponsorship deals. GOAT, a brand that paid the club €15–20 million annually, ended its partnership after Messi and Neymar left. Although PSG’s ownership structure ensures the club is not overly dependent on commercial revenue, the decline in branding appeal is a concerning development.
A new chapter for PSG
Without the global draw of household names like Messi, Neymar, or Mbappe, PSG is entering a new era, where the focus has shifted to building a more balanced squad rather than relying on individual superstars. However, the commercial consequences of this strategy are already evident.
