Mr. Ajax, Sjaak Swart, handed cash to Volendam’s captain after their win over Jong Ajax, supporting the club’s need to fund a new pitch ahead of Eredivisie promotion.
In one of the most heartwarming scenes of the Dutch football weekend, Ajax legend Sjaak Swart—known as “Mr. Ajax”—personally contributed to FC Volendam’s promotion dreams with a handful of banknotes after the club defeated Jong Ajax 2-0 in the Eerste Divisie.
The 86-year-old Swart, who holds the record for the most appearances in Ajax history, was clearly impressed by Volendam’s display. After the match, he approached the Volendam captain and squeezed several €50 notes into his hand, smiling warmly—as if he were a proud grandfather supporting his grandchildren.
Volendam currently lead the second tier by nine points and are on a sensational run of seven straight wins, racing toward Eredivisie promotion. However, the club faces a serious issue: their pitch is made of artificial turf, which is not permitted in the Dutch top flight.
To meet Eredivisie standards, the club must replace it with natural grass—a project that will cost approximately €1.2 million. Unlike other leagues, promotion to the top flight does not guarantee major financial windfalls in the Netherlands, meaning Volendam must raise funds independently.
Swart’s symbolic gesture resonated deeply with fans, as the legendary figure recognized the club’s commitment and effort. His act is already being celebrated as a reminder of football’s community spirit and generosity.
Volendam will face Jong PSV next, followed by Jong AZ Alkmaar, with just four matches remaining after that as they look to seal promotion and secure the funds needed for their new pitch.
