Lionel Messi: 'What this Argentina team did today is crazy'

Lionel Messi admitted he had rarely experienced anything like Argentina's dramatic comeback against Egypt after the reigning world champions recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 and reach the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.

Argentina looked destined for a shock elimination after falling 2-0 behind, while Messi also endured the frustration of seeing his first-half penalty saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.

But the world champions refused to surrender.

Messi set up Cristian Romero to pull a goal back in the 79th minute before scoring the equaliser himself five minutes later. Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds of the tournament.

Despite once again playing a decisive role, Messi insisted the victory belonged to the entire squad.

"Honestly, what this team did today is crazy."

"We came back from 2-0 down in a World Cup knockout match. In this tournament, nobody gives you anything. Every goal is difficult, every match is difficult."

The Argentina captain said the comeback perfectly reflected the mentality that has made his side one of the favourites to retain the World Cup.

"This team has shown again that it can compete with anyone. We never give up. We fight until the very last second. Today we answered every doubt with our performance."

The emotion was shared by head coach Lionel Scaloni, who struggled to contain his feelings after the final whistle.

During a television interview, the Argentina manager briefly lost his words before smiling and saying:

"What kind of players are these? Incredible."

Argentina's dramatic victory kept their title defence alive and set up a quarter-final meeting with Switzerland, while the comeback immediately entered the conversation as one of the defining moments of the 2026 World Cup.
