Lionel Messi has revealed his unusual favourite drink — wine mixed with Sprite — as he enjoys his break after leading Inter Miami to MLS Cup glory and prepares for what could be his final World Cup with Argentina.
Lionel Messi may be the most decorated footballer in history, but even he has simple — and slightly unusual — ways to relax.
The 38-year-old Argentine star has given fans a rare glimpse into his private life during a recent interview, as he enjoys a well-earned break after another demanding and successful season.
Messi helped Inter Miami win their first-ever MLS Cup, providing two assists in the final as the Florida club beat Vancouver Whitecaps. He described the triumph as “beautiful and emotional”.
And how did he celebrate? With a very specific drink.
Speaking to Luzu TV, Messi admitted: “I like wine, but if not, I have my usual: wine with Sprite. So it hits fast, haha!”
The Argentine explained that the mixture suits him perfectly, especially in the Miami heat, helping him relax after intense periods of competition.
Messi also opened up about his personality and his need for time alone, as he balances life in the spotlight with family life alongside his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three sons — Thiago, Mateo and Ciro.
“I’m weirder than s**t. I really like being alone. The mess at home with the three kids running around everywhere ends up saturating me and I like a moment of solitude,” Messi said.
“I’m very structured. If I have the day organised in a certain way and something changes in the middle, it affects me. Antonela can say many more things than I can — it depends on my mood, on many small stupid things,” he added.
While enjoying his break, Messi is also looking ahead to what could be his sixth and final World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Argentina go into the tournament as defending champions after Messi led them to glory in Qatar 2022, scoring twice in the final against France.
He has remained cautious about his participation, but made it clear how much the tournament still means to him.
“I hope I can be there. I’ve said before that I’d love to be there. At worst, I’ll be there watching it live, but it will be special,” Messi said.
Argentina have been drawn in a group with Algeria, Austria and Jordan, with their opening match scheduled for June 17.
For now, Messi is enjoying his rest, his family — and, occasionally, his very specific glass of wine with Sprite.
