Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller will meet in the MLS final between Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps. Müller leads their head-to-head 7–3, with Messi seeking long-awaited revenge.
The MLS Championship final is set — and it’s a clash of legends between Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller. On Saturday, Inter Miami will face Vancouver Whitecaps in a star-studded showdown that brings two of Europe’s most iconic veterans head-to-head once again.
For European football fans, it’s a familiar duel. Messi and Müller have already faced each other ten times throughout their storied careers — in the Champions League, World Cup, and club friendlies. The record heavily favours the German: Müller has seven wins against Messi’s teams, while the Argentine has celebrated just three times.
Their only previous meeting in a final came at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Müller’s Germany defeated Messi’s Argentina 1–0 to lift football’s greatest trophy. Eleven years later, the two legends meet again — this time in North America, with the MLS title on the line.
Messi guided Inter Miami to the final with a 5–1 thrashing of NYCFC, while Müller inspired Vancouver Whitecaps through a gritty Western Conference campaign. Both veterans are chasing a historic title: for Messi, another chance at revenge and silverware; for Müller, proof that his winning instinct travels wherever he plays.
Thomas Müller summed up the excitement ahead of the clash: “It’s always special to face Leo. We’ve shared some incredible matches in Europe. Now, it’s time for a new chapter — in America.”
