Jamie Carragher admitted surprise at Liverpool's managerial direction after the club reportedly moved for Andoni Iraola instead of Xabi Alonso.
Jamie Carragher does not seem convinced by Liverpool's reported managerial direction.
Following the departure of Arne Slot, strong reports suggest that Andoni Iraola is heading toward Anfield. The former Liverpool defender believes the club missed a huge opportunity.
His preferred choice was clear.
Xabi Alonso.
The former Liverpool midfielder was available before eventually accepting a move to Chelsea, and many supporters continue asking the same question.
Why did Liverpool not move earlier?
Carragher openly shared his doubts.
"I would have chosen Xabi Alonso."
"When he went to Chelsea, I was sure Slot would stay at Liverpool."
For Carragher, the logic seemed obvious.
Alonso already knows the club, understands pressure at the elite level, and has quickly built one of Europe's strongest coaching reputations.
"An incredible CV. He played for the best managers, achieved a lot at Bayer Leverkusen, and also managed Real Madrid, so he has experience with high pressure."
There is also another detail Carragher pointed toward.
Florian Wirtz.
Alonso previously coached the German star, which could have strengthened Liverpool's recruitment plans.
His concerns about Iraola focus more on style.
"The club may not like Alonso's style of football, but I'm not sure they have the right players for the intensity Andoni Iraola requires."
Why Carragher preferred Alonso:
• Liverpool connection after five years as player
• Success with Bayer Leverkusen
• Experience handling pressure environments
• Existing relationships with elite players
• Tactical flexibility
Whatever happens, the Premier League coaching picture looks very different heading into the new season.
Major managerial storylines for next season:
• Liverpool changing coach again
• Chelsea beginning the Alonso era
• Manchester City entering life after Pep Guardiola
• Michael Carrick starting first full season at Manchester United
• Roberto De Zerbi beginning first full campaign at Tottenham
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta remains the man everyone will chase after guiding Arsenal to the league title.
Liverpool's decision now faces immediate scrutiny.
If Iraola arrives, comparisons with Alonso will begin from day one.
