Liverpool still has a chance despite a dominant PSG display, but its explanations raise more questions after a one-sided Champions League clash.
Liverpool were outplayed in every aspect against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, with the 2-0 defeat reflecting only part of the gap between the teams.
PSG controlled the match from start to finish, pressing constantly and denying Liverpool any rhythm.
In the end, the visitors could consider themselves fortunate to concede only two goals.
Statistics expose the gap
The numbers underline the scale of Liverpool’s struggles.
PSG had 70 percent possession, 18 shots compared to Liverpool’s three, 60 attacks to 26, and completed 696 passes against just 198.
The pattern was clear throughout the match, with PSG controlling the ball, dictating tempo, and wearing down their opponent.
Slot insists belief remains
Arne Slot tried to defend his team despite the performance.
"PSG were better, we could have scored many more goals. Anyway, my team showed a fighting spirit, and we supported each other. Considering Liverpool's history and greatness, it is clear that we have to play better. The fans have to support us, because we still have the opportunities that just playing at Anfield gives us."
His comments did little to ease concerns after such a one-sided display.
Salah decision raises eyebrows
One of the biggest surprises was the absence of Mohamed Salah, who remained on the bench.
Slot offered an unusual explanation.
"In the last part of the game, let's say the last 20-25 minutes, we just defended. And when we defend so much in our own half, it's not a game for him. The opportunity for him to play will come when the circumstances are different."
The decision and the explanation have added further pressure on the Liverpool coach ahead of the return leg at Anfield.
