Liverpool supporters vandalised Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mural ahead of the Real Madrid match, writing “Adios, rat” after his controversial departure from Anfield.
On the day of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid, tensions reached a boiling point at Anfield as fans vandalised Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mural, once a symbol of local pride.
The artwork, located near Anfield, had long celebrated the Liverpool-born full-back’s journey from West Derby to global stardom. Beneath his portrait read the famous line: “I’m just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream came true.”
From pride to betrayal
That message — once an emblem of Liverpool’s working-class spirit — is now overshadowed by anger and resentment. Early this morning, just hours before kick-off, the mural was covered in white paint, and across it appeared a graffiti message in both English and Spanish reading “Adios, rat.”
The mural had originally been painted by supporters’ group The Anfield Wrap after Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph over Tottenham Hotspur, when Alexander-Arnold was hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young defenders and a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s golden era.
Fans divided over his departure
The vandalism reflects the divided emotions surrounding the 25-year-old’s move to Real Madrid. Once seen as Liverpool’s local hero and future captain, Alexander-Arnold announced earlier this year that he would not extend his contract with the club.
For some fans, his decision to leave was a betrayal of his roots and the team that made him a star. For others, it was a professional choice that shouldn’t tarnish his legacy.
The timing of the vandalism — just hours before Liverpool host Real Madrid — only underlines how raw the emotions remain on Merseyside.
