Liverpool have signed 18-year-old Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans on a six-year contract in a deal that could eventually be worth £30 million.

Liverpool have completed the signing of highly rated Belgian goalkeeper
Lucca Brughmans from Genk, making a major long-term investment in the 18-year-old.
Brughmans has already signed his contract at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre, with the BBC reporting that the agreement runs for six years. The total value of the transfer could eventually reach around £30 million (€35m) if all bonuses and additional payments are triggered.
Despite completing the move, Brughmans will not immediately relocate to England. Liverpool have agreed that he will return to Genk for the entire 2026/27 season, allowing him to continue playing regular first-team football before joining the Premier League club ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
Already Genk's first-choice goalkeeper at 18
Brughmans immediately stands out because of his imposing 201cm frame, but Liverpool's investment is based on considerably more than his physical attributes. The teenager has made rapid progress into senior football and is already playing regularly for one of Belgium's leading clubs.
After making 32 appearances for Genk's reserve team, Brughmans was handed his senior debut in April 2026. He kept his place for the remainder of the campaign, making another 10 league appearances, and has started the new season as Genk's first-choice goalkeeper.
The teenager has been between the posts for all four of Genk's matches so far this season, meaning Liverpool are signing a goalkeeper who has already made the transition from youth football into a demanding senior environment.
Liverpool make major investment for the future
Brughmans also has significant experience at international youth level. He captained Belgium at both the U17 European Championship and U17 World Cup in 2025 and has since become captain of his country's U19 side.
The size and structure of the deal underline how highly Liverpool rate his long-term potential. A package potentially reaching £30m represents an enormous investment in a goalkeeper who is still only 18, although a significant part of that figure depends on future bonuses.
His decision to remain at Genk for another season should provide Brughmans with valuable senior experience before the pressure of competing for a place at Anfield begins.
Liverpool therefore appear to be planning several years ahead. Alisson remains one of the most established goalkeepers of his generation, but the acquisition of Brughmans gives the club a highly rated young option who could eventually compete for the position.
For now, Liverpool have secured his future while allowing his development to continue in Belgium. If Brughmans fulfils the potential that persuaded the English champions to commit such a substantial package, the £30m deal could ultimately represent the beginning of a very long career at Anfield.
