Harvey Elliott could be about to take one of the most important decisions of his career.

The 23-year-old Liverpool midfielder is close to joining Valencia on loan after informing the club that he wants to leave Anfield in search of regular football.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Elliott has already agreed terms with Valencia following talks with the Spanish club. A final agreement between the two clubs is now required before the transfer can be completed.

Napoli and Lazio have also shown interest, but Elliott has reportedly made a move to La Liga his priority.

Valencia could offer what Liverpool cannot

Elliott was once regarded as one of the brightest talents of his generation in English football, but his career has stalled considerably over the past year.

He performed well during Liverpool's preparations for the new season and registered an assist in a friendly against Sunderland, but that was not enough to significantly improve his position in the squad.

Competition at Anfield has become even stronger, with Florian Wirtz among the players ahead of Elliott in the midfield hierarchy.

At Valencia, Elliott believes he would have a much better opportunity to play regularly and rediscover the form that once made him one of Liverpool's most exciting young players.

There is also another important factor. Elliott's Liverpool contract expires next summer, meaning the proposed loan could have major consequences for his long-term future at Anfield.

Only four appearances at Aston Villa

Elliott desperately needs a more successful loan after a frustrating 2025/26 campaign with Aston Villa.

The midfielder made only four appearances under Unai Emery after joining Villa on loan.

His limited playing time was reportedly influenced by a clause that would have triggered a £35m obligation to buy if certain appearance conditions were met.

Elliott eventually returned to Liverpool without establishing himself at Villa, but he has also received no guarantees of a significant role at Anfield this season.

That has opened the door to Valencia.

At 23, Elliott still has plenty of time to rebuild the momentum his career has lost. A move to Mestalla and regular football in La Liga could be exactly the fresh start Liverpool's former wonderkid needs.
