Loris Karius secures promotion with Schalke after years of struggle, as his wife Diletta Leotta reveals he nearly quit football following his Champions League setback.
Loris Karius has completed a remarkable turnaround in his career, helping Schalke return to the Bundesliga after a difficult period following his time at Liverpool.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper was once defined by his performance in the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018, where two costly errors led to a 3-1 defeat in Kyiv.
That night marked the end of his Liverpool career. He never played for the club again and officially left in 2022.
Redemption in Germany
Now back in his home country, Karius has played a key role in Schalke’s promotion.
The decisive moment came with a 1-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf, confirming their return to the top flight with two matches remaining.
Karius recorded his 12th clean sheet of the season in that match and has conceded only 24 goals in 29 appearances, numbers that highlight his importance to the team.
Support from Diletta Leotta
While the team celebrated in Gelsenkirchen, his wife Diletta Leotta shared an emotional message.
“This sport can be tough. It tests you and exposes you. But if you find the strength to continue, it brings you back where you belong,” she wrote.
“I have seen that strength in difficult moments, on days when it would have been easier to stop. This is not only a victory, but it is also a return. I am proud of you.”
Leotta, who is expecting their second child, highlighted how close Karius came to leaving football during his lowest period.
A career rebuilt
Karius’ story reflects persistence after public setbacks. From the disappointment in Kyiv to leading Schalke back to the Bundesliga, he has rebuilt his career step by step.
This promotion stands as a defining moment, showing how resilience can reshape a career once written off.
