Luis Díaz skipped Diogo Jota’s funeral to attend a party in Colombia, sparking fury among Liverpool fans—especially after Jota had publicly supported him during his family’s crisis.
Shock and disappointment have swept across the Liverpool fanbase after it was revealed that Luis Díaz missed the funeral of his teammate Diogo Jota—not due to travel or personal reasons, but because he was attending a party in Colombia.
Jota and his younger brother André Silva tragically died last Thursday in a horrific car crash in Spain. The brothers were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout, crashed into a guardrail, and caught fire. Emergency responders were unable to save them.
The funeral, held Saturday in Gondomar, Portugal, was attended by most of Liverpool’s squad and several members of the Portuguese national team. However, fans quickly noticed the absence of Colombian winger Luis Díaz, leading to speculation and questions.
While Cristiano Ronaldo was initially criticized for not attending, it was later confirmed that he had personally contacted the Jota family and deliberately stayed away to avoid distracting from the grief of the day.
But Díaz’s situation has created real anger. Photos emerged online showing him attending a private party hosted by a Colombian influencer on the same day as the funeral. This revelation has led to fierce backlash on social media, with many fans calling the decision disrespectful and insensitive.
Some attempted to defend Díaz by citing the long flight from Colombia to Portugal. However, that argument fell apart when Rúben Dias, who had played just hours earlier for Al Hilal in the Club World Cup in the United States, made it to the funeral in time.
Adding to the emotional weight of the moment is the fact that Diogo Jota had publicly supported Díaz during his darkest time. When Díaz’s father was kidnapped in Colombia last year, Jota held up Díaz’s shirt after scoring—sending a powerful message of solidarity and support.
Now, many are questioning Díaz’s sense of loyalty and respect. What was expected to be a moment of unity for the Liverpool family has instead turned into a public relations disaster for the Colombian star.
