Luis Suarez admitted he remains available for Uruguay despite his past conflict with Marcelo Bielsa and could still play at another World Cup.
Luis Suarez could yet write one final chapter in his legendary international career.
More than a year after retiring from the Uruguay national team, the veteran striker has now admitted he remains open to a sensational comeback ahead of this year’s World Cup.
The 39-year-old officially stepped away from international football in September 2024 following a major fallout with Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa.
At the time, Suarez publicly criticized the experienced Argentine manager, accusing him of creating a poor atmosphere inside the national team camp and maintaining a cold relationship with players.
The controversy caused a huge reaction across South America.
According to Uruguayan media, Bielsa never fully forgave Suarez for the public comments.
Now, however, the former Barcelona, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker appears ready to rebuild the relationship.
" I said some things back then that I shouldn’t have. You have to admit your mistakes."
"For me, that’s in the past now. If they need me, I’ll never say no to my country. As long as I’m active, I’ll be available."
Suarez remains one of the greatest players in Uruguay’s football history.
He is still the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances.
The striker also helped Uruguay win the Copa America in 2011 and became one of the defining faces of the national team across multiple generations.
If selected by Bielsa, Suarez would participate in his fifth World Cup.
He has already represented Uruguay at tournaments in South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar.
Uruguay will begin this year’s World Cup campaign in Group H alongside Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
The possibility of Suarez returning now adds another fascinating storyline ahead of the tournament.
