Real Madrid announced that Luka Modric will miss the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Mallorca due to illness, leaving Carlo Ancelotti to reconsider his midfield options.
Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday that captain Luka Modric will not feature in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Mallorca. The Croatian midfielder, who played in Real Madrid’s last Copa del Rey clash against Deportiva Minera, is suffering from a viral infection and has been ruled out of the important match.
Carlo Ancelotti had initially assembled a full-strength squad for the trip to Saudi Arabia, with only the previously known absentees—Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and Jesus Vallejo—missing from the list. Recently, David Alaba joined the squad, and several youth players were awarded a call-up. However, just hours before the match, the team suffered a blow with Modric’s sudden unavailability.
Modric had been gaining importance in recent games. He played a pivotal role in the recent Copa del Rey match, helping Madrid secure a comfortable **5-0 win** over La Minera. Earlier, in the match against Valencia, Modric came off the bench to score a crucial equalizer that sparked a comeback.
Now, Ancelotti must rethink his midfield without Modric. Fortunately, he has plenty of options at his disposal, including Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos, Federico Valverde, and Jude Bellingham.
Real Madrid will hope to overcome this setback and secure a spot in the Super Cup final, with Ancelotti confident that his squad depth will help cover Modric’s absence.
