Manchester City will sell Jack Grealish for just £40 million after Pep Guardiola confirmed the midfielder no longer fits into the club’s plans.
Jack Grealish's time at Manchester City appears to be over, with the club prepared to sell him for a cut-price fee of £40 million this summer. The decision marks a major shift for the Premier League champions, who signed the former Aston Villa captain for a British record £100 million in 2021.
Now 29, Grealish has struggled for consistent form and game time in recent seasons. He was not included in the squad for the Club World Cup and was also omitted from the team on the final day of the Premier League season. Despite helping City to a historic treble in 2023, his impact has since diminished, and only seven Premier League starts in the 2024/25 season reflect his current standing in the squad.
City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed the midfielder’s uncertain future, stating: “Of course, Jack has to play. He’s an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn’t happen this season and last season either.”
Guardiola added: “It’s nothing personal with Jack. I’m the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season. If he stays, it will be fine, and he’ll fight like he always has. But he needs to play — with us or somewhere else.”
Grealish still has two years left on his contract, but City are open to taking a £60 million loss in order to speed up the transfer. His representatives are already searching for a new club.
City are undergoing a wider squad reshuffle after finishing third in the league. They are targeting AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon forward Rayan Cherki, with hopes to secure both before the Club World Cup in the United States.
Alongside Grealish, other high-profile names such as Kyle Walker and John Stones could also leave. Kevin De Bruyne has already exited, while coaching staff including Carlos Vicens (now Braga head coach), Juanma Lillo, and Inigo Dominguez have also departed the club.
