Manchester City fan group We Are 1984 has clarified that the controversial banner was not meant for Vinicius Junior, but was actually directed at Florentino Perez.
The banner reading 'Stop crying your heart out', referencing an Oasis song, caused a stir after appearing at the Etihad Stadium during Manchester City’s clash with Real Madrid. The sign also featured an image of Rodri kissing the Ballon d’Or, leading many to believe it was aimed at Vinicius Junior, who had been vocal about his frustration after missing out on the award.
However, the We Are 1984 supporters’ group has since issued a statement denying that the banner was intended for Vinicius.
“No one in the media understood that the person to whom the message on the banner was addressed was not even on the pitch. The message was for Florentino Perez. He was the one who started the campaign to smear Rodri and boycott Real Madrid by the club and the players. We had to send this message regardless of the result of the match.”
Despite their clarification, the banner had already gone viral, sparking heated debates among fans and media alike. Regardless of its true target, it certainly made an impact.
