Manchester City smash transfer record with €526m spending spree

Manchester City have completed one of the most extraordinary transfer windows football has ever seen, investing an unprecedented €526 million in new players while also generating €337m from departures.

City began the summer relatively quietly before dramatically accelerating their business towards the end of the window. They saved their biggest moves for deadline day, spending around €215m on Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye within a matter of hours – almost as much as Real Madrid spent on new players throughout the entire summer.

City break Liverpool's spending record

The final €526m outlay makes this the most expensive single transfer window in football history. The previous benchmark had been established by Liverpool only a year earlier, when the Anfield club spent approximately €480m on a spectacular recruitment drive that included Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The biggest deal of City's summer was Enzo Fernández, who arrived for €145m and became the most expensive signing in the history of English football. England international Elliot Anderson was not far behind, costing €135m, meaning City committed €280m to those two midfielders alone.

Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi represented another enormous investment at €95m. Brazilian prospect Allan arrived from Palmeiras for €37.5m, while highly rated French youngster Mathys Detourbet cost another €25m.

City also added Jeremy Monga and goalkeepers Gerónimo Rulli and Pierce Charles, with those three deals worth approximately €19m combined. The sheer scale of the operation means even transfers worth tens of millions appear relatively modest compared with the club's biggest purchases.

€337m in sales dramatically reduce City's net spend

The headline expenditure does not tell the entire story. City also conducted an extraordinary clear-out, raising approximately €337m from player sales and therefore reducing their net investment to around €189m.

Among those leaving were Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri, Nico González, James Trafford, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Aké and Issa Kaboré. John Stones and Bernardo Silva departed after their contracts expired, while Jack Grealish and Omar Marmoush were sent out on loan.

Adding City's reported €526m expenditure to their €337m in sales means approximately €863m worth of transfer business passed through the club during a single summer.

That figure illustrates the unprecedented scale of the rebuild. City have not merely broken the record for spending in one transfer window; they have simultaneously reshaped a substantial part of their squad while recovering hundreds of millions of euros through departures.

The most dramatic moment came right at the end. After already spending heavily throughout the summer, City committed another €215m to Fernández and Ndiaye in the final hours, completing a transfer window whose financial scale has no precedent in football history.
