Casemiro handed his FA Cup winners' medal to Tyrell Malacia, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and support for the sidelined Manchester United defender.
Casemiro has revealed the heartfelt reason behind his decision to give his FA Cup winners' medal to teammate Tyrell Malacia, who did not play a single match during the 2022-23 season. Malacia, sidelined after undergoing knee surgery in the summer of 2023, was hesitant to join the celebrations at Wembley following Manchester United’s 2-1 triumph over Manchester City.
Despite his struggles, Malacia remained a supportive presence for his team. However, the Dutch full-back initially resisted climbing the steps during the trophy presentation, as he was not awarded a medal. Recognizing Malacia’s contribution to the squad’s morale, Casemiro stepped in to make sure his teammate felt included.
"I didn't know Malacia had talked about it, but it's true, I gave him my medal," Casemiro told reporters. "He hadn't played a single game that season, and he didn't want to climb the steps. There was no medal for him, so I gave him mine. He's part of the team and we're counting on him. Even though he hasn't played this season, we love him, we need him, and he also needs love."
Malacia’s absence was due to knee surgery that kept him off the pitch for the entire season. Despite the setback, the defender’s dedication and presence were appreciated by his teammates, as Casemiro’s gesture demonstrated the unity within the squad.
Manchester United will look to carry this team spirit into their upcoming matches, with a home game against Everton on Sunday, followed by a midweek clash with Arsenal in what promises to be a challenging test for Erik ten Hag’s side.
