Following The Telegraph's investigation, Manchester United and Manchester City have been alerted to possible age fraud within their academies.
The report raises concerns about at least six foreign-born players, including three who have represented England at youth level, who may be older than their official records indicate.
Documents and photographs reviewed during the investigation have cast doubt on the true ages of certain academy players. While no definitive proof of wrongdoing has emerged, the findings have sparked concerns among parents and raised broader issues about safeguarding and fairness in youth football.
Potential implications and regulatory concerns
Neither United nor City have been accused of knowingly allowing age fraud, but the situation has wider implications, including potential concerns over child trafficking. FIFA regulations impose strict limits on the international transfers of minors unless their families relocate for reasons unrelated to football.
The Premier League, Manchester United, and Manchester City have declined to comment on whether any action has been taken. However, United released a statement reaffirming their commitment to following all regulations.
“We are committed to operating all aspects of our academy within the rules and regulations laid down by our governing bodies, including in the recruitment and registration of players,” the club stated.
Parental concerns and safeguarding measures
Following the report, several parents of other academy players have reached out to Football Association and Premier League safeguarding officials, voicing concerns about their children competing against players who may be significantly older.
