Autopsy confirms Diego Maradona died from heart failure, with pathologists revealing no drug or alcohol use but an enlarged heart and signs of organ failure.

Pathologists testifying in the ongoing trial concerning Diego Maradona’s death have revealed that the late football legend’s heart weighed 503 grams — nearly twice the size of an average heart, which typically ranges from 250 to 300 grams.
The case is part of a high-profile legal proceeding against seven members of Maradona’s medical team, accused of criminal negligence in connection with his death on 25 November 2020, at the age of 60.
“None of the four samples showed traces of alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, ecstasy or amphetamines,” testified biochemist Ezequiel Ventosi, ruling out drug or alcohol overdose as a cause of death.
Pathologist Alejandro Ezequiel Vega added that analysis of the heart muscle confirmed that Maradona suffered from a severe form of ischemia, indicating a reduced oxygen and blood supply through his arteries.
Additional toxicology reports revealed traces of five substances, commonly linked to antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-nausea medications and antiepileptics, present in his blood at the time of death.
Pathologist Silvana de Pietro noted signs of cirrhosis in the liver, as well as indicators of kidney, heart, and lung failure.
The final autopsy concluded that Maradona died from acute pulmonary edema, a build-up of fluid in the lungs caused by heart failure.
He passed away at a private residence on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, just days after undergoing brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma — a blood clot between the skull and the brain.
According to the prosecution, the seven medical professionals involved — including a neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, attending physician and several nurses — failed to provide adequate care, which may have contributed to his death.
