Real Madrid marked Jose Mourinho’s long-awaited return to the Santiago Bernabeu with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad, inspired by a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe.
Mourinho was back in the home dugout for the first time since leaving the Spanish giants on June 1, 2013. His first home assignment came against a Real Sociedad side that has regularly caused Madrid problems.
The opening half showed that Mourinho’s new team has yet to develop the authority and intensity associated with its most dominant sides. The contest changed after the break, when Madrid increased the tempo and overwhelmed the visitors.
Mbappe completed a hat-trick, while Vinicius Junior added the other goal as Madrid secured a convincing victory in front of their supporters.
The French forward has now scored three goals after two rounds of La Liga. Madrid also started the season with an away victory against Espanyol, and Mbappe has quickly emerged as the leading favourite to win another Pichichi Trophy.
Spanish newspaper Marca responded to his performance by comparing him with Slovenian cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar, who currently leads the Vuelta a España. Pogacar enjoys huge recognition in Spain, a country with a rich cycling tradition.
“The uncertainty at the Tour de France did not last even one week. At the Vuelta a España, it ended on the first difficult stage. That was what the beast named Tadej Pogacar wanted. The battle to become La Liga’s top scorer appears likely to be as competitive as every race in which the Slovenian truly gets going,” Marca wrote.
The Madrid-based newspaper believes Mbappe has already strengthened his position in the scoring race, despite missing several clear opportunities in the opening two matches.
“Mbappe has significantly increased his chances of finishing as La Liga’s leading scorer again after only two matches. He achieved it last season and the season before, having also done so six times before leaving PSG for Real Madrid. And this despite wasting several excellent chances in both games. Just wait for the day when everything truly falls into place for him...” Marca added.
Real Madrid will remain at the Bernabeu for their next league fixture, with Malaga visiting in the third round.
