35-year-old Turkish coach Tugberk Tanrivermis has signed a two-year contract with NK Maribor, replacing Boštjan Cesar as head coach.
Tugberk Tanrivermis will soon be officially unveiled as the new manager of NK Maribor, after well-known Turkish transfer insider Yagiz Sabuncuoglu – often dubbed the "Turkish Fabrizio Romano" – confirmed the deal earlier today.
As previously reported by Nogomania, Acun Ilicali, Maribor's new investor and co-owner, handpicked his compatriot Tanrivermis to replace Boštjan Cesar on the bench. The young coach has signed a contract that will run until the summer of 2026.
Tanrivermis, a 35-year-old coach with no professional playing background, took a methodical path into coaching. He started at just 21 years old as an assistant with Galatasaray’s youth teams and climbed the youth coaching ranks before moving to Italy in 2018, where he worked with the youth setups of Roma and Spezia.
Last season, he took his first senior job at St. Pölten in Austria’s second division, where he impressed with 11 wins in 19 matches. The team finished fourth, narrowly missing out on promotion.
Though relatively unknown to the Slovenian public, Tanrivermis is considered part of a new wave of modern, analytical coaches, valued for his detailed preparation and progressive footballing ideas. His appointment at Maribor marks the biggest challenge of his career, as he now takes charge of Slovenia’s most decorated club, with a strong tradition in European competitions.
