Maribor want Dinamo’s Ademi, but deal waits on Ilicali

While Maribor appear quiet following the end of the season, the silence is deceptive. Behind the scenes, significant activity is underway, especially in Istanbul, where Turkish owner Acun Ilicali and his close associates are currently based. Meanwhile, head coach Boštjan Cesar and his players are enjoying their offseason break.

Before the campaign ended, the club managed to extend several contracts, but the main focus now shifts toward strengthening the squad. Fans expect reinforcements capable of pushing for the Slovenian championship title, and sporting director Mihael Mikić has been actively working to make that happen.

Mikić has compiled and submitted a list of potential signings, including players who are open to joining the club—but most of them come with higher wage demands. To secure their targets, Maribor will have to invest more than they have in recent years.

One of the top names on the list is Arijan Ademi, the experienced Dinamo Zagreb midfielder. Croatian media recently confirmed talks between the two clubs, though Ademi still has a valid contract and a substantial salary that complicates the deal.

Maribor see Ademi not only as a key reinforcement but also as a mentor to younger players, fitting well into Ilicali's long-term vision of developing young talent. A similar role is already being filled by Hillal Soudani, who is set to stay with the club next season.

According to Nogomania sources, Ademi is interested in the move, and Zvonimir Boban, newly appointed head of football at Dinamo, is also supportive. What’s missing is a concrete financial offer from Maribor. Since they are unlikely to cover Ademi’s entire wage package, a compromise will be needed.

Now, the ball is in Acun Ilicali’s court. Last summer, he was slow and indecisive with reinforcements, which ultimately frustrated then-coach Ante Šimundža. This time, timeliness and clarity will be key—and Maribor fans will be watching closely.
