Portugal coach Roberto Martínez is reportedly under consideration for the Manchester United job, as uncertainty continues over Michael Carrick’s long-term future.

Manchester United continue to evaluate their managerial options for next season, with Roberto Martínez reportedly emerging as a candidate for the role.

According to British journalist Ben Jacobs, the current Portugal national team coach is among the names being discussed internally at Old Trafford as the club assess their long-term direction.

Martínez under consideration

Martínez remains under contract with Portugal until 31 July 2026, immediately after the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, reports suggest that changes could occur within the Portuguese setup, potentially opening the door for a move.

The Spanish coach has extensive Premier League experience, having previously managed Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton. His most notable achievement in England came in 2013, when Wigan defeated Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

Jacobs revealed in the The United Stand podcast:

“One of the names mentioned to me inside Manchester United is Roberto Martínez. It is expected that he will leave the Portugal national team because José Mourinho could take over. I don’t think his style would place him at the very top for this job, but he is definitely on the list, along with Nagelsmann and De Zerbi.”

Carrick still in charge – for now

United are currently led by Michael Carrick, who is serving as interim head coach until the end of the season. Despite an impressive run of results under his leadership, the club hierarchy remain undecided about making his position permanent.

The debate reflects United’s broader search for stability following several transitional seasons. Alongside Martínez, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto De Zerbi are also reportedly under consideration.

With key decisions approaching, the coming months could shape a defining chapter in the club’s post-transition era.
