Javier Mascherano says Lionel Messi's visible frustration stems from high standards as Inter Miami prepare for a key MLS clash with Minnesota United.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has responded to reports of Lionel Messi's frustration in recent matches, defending his former international teammate as a player with elite standards and a deep desire to win.
Despite a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, where Messi found the net, the Argentine’s body language has been scrutinized following a three-game losing streak that included elimination in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals and a 4-3 defeat to FC Dallas.
“Leo is a competitive beast – it’s normal,” Mascherano told reporters. “Those of us who’ve known him for a long time understand how demanding he is, not only with himself but also with those around him.”
Miami sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with 21 points ahead of Saturday's trip to Minnesota United, a chance to regain momentum and close the gap at the top.
Since taking charge, Mascherano has guided the Herons to 11 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses in 18 matches. Notably, three of those defeats came back-to-back and included the costly Champions Cup exit against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Mascherano confirmed Miami are exploring new attacking signings ahead of their Club World Cup campaign. “We need to bring in someone who truly strengthens us. Especially in attack, the club is actively evaluating options,” he said.
For the upcoming match, Inter Miami will be without Luis Suárez, who traveled for personal reasons, and goalkeeper Drake Callender, who is injured. David Ruiz also remains out, while Baltasar Rodríguez is a doubt as he recovers from injury.
As Messi leads the team in goals and assists this season, Mascherano is hopeful that his star player’s competitive edge can help the Herons bounce back and reignite their title ambitions.
