Gianfilippo Materazzi, nephew of Italian legend Marco Materazzi, joins Serbia’s U17 squad after opting to represent the country through his Serbian heritage.
Gianfilippo Materazzi, nephew of former Italy defender Marco Materazzi, has decided to represent Serbia at international level and has been included in the country’s U17 squad.
The Football Association of Serbia (FSS) confirmed that the talented Italian-born player was added to coach Igor Matić’s cadet selection list. Gianfilippo qualifies for Serbia through his mother’s Serbian roots, a factor that proved decisive in his choice.
A strategic move for Serbia
FSS general secretary Branko Radujko underlined the importance of attracting dual-nationality prospects to Serbia’s development system.
“It is extremely important for us to present a clear vision to every young player of Serbian origin, regardless of where he was born or raised, and to show how much we want him to be part of our system. Serbia must be the first choice for every child who has our blood and feels connected to our country,” Radujko said on the federation’s official website.
He also highlighted the collective effort behind the recruitment process.
“Nikola Lazetić established the first contact and played an important role in communication with the family. We also owe thanks to senior national team coach Veljko Paunović, whose authority and clear vision of youth development were additional motivation for Gianfilippo and his family. We are grateful as well to the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the municipality of Zvezdara for their swift and efficient procedures. This is the result of teamwork and long-term strategy.”
Following a famous surname
Gianfilippo carries a famous surname in world football. His uncle Marco Materazzi won the 2006 World Cup with Italy and enjoyed a decorated club career, most notably with Inter Milan.
Now, the next generation of the Materazzi family is set to begin an international journey in Serbian colours.
