Matjaž Kek has ended his second spell as Slovenia coach after his contract expired, with NZS confirming the start of a new era for the national team.
Slovenia will enter a new era in 2026 after Matjaž Kek officially stepped down as head coach of the national team. The Football Association of Slovenia (NZS) confirmed on Saturday that Kek’s contract expired on 30 November and will not be renewed, ending a seven-year second spell in charge of the national side.
Kek met with NZS president Radenko Mijatović, and the two agreed to conclude their cooperation after what the federation described as a long and successful partnership. Kek leaves behind one of the most stable and productive periods in Slovenia’s recent football history.
In their public statement, NZS thanked Kek for his work and achievements:
“After seven years of very good and correct cooperation, which brought an exceptional achievement with qualification for the European Championship and a place in the Round of 16, the cooperation is ending.”
The federation emphasised the importance of Kek’s contribution, noting that Slovenia once again established itself firmly on the European football map. NZS also highlighted the strong bond built between the team and supporters, which played a major role in creating memorable atmospheres both at home and during the Euro in Germany.
The next national team gathering is scheduled for 23 March 2026, giving NZS ample time to choose a new head coach without pressure. The selection process will be conducted carefully, ensuring the right long-term fit for the national team’s future ambitions.
Kek, who previously led Slovenia to the World Cup in 2010 during his first tenure, departs as one of the most successful and influential coaches in Slovenian football history.
