Kylian Mbappe scored his first-ever free-kick in Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final loss to Barcelona, forcing the shutdown of a viral X account that chronicled his drought.
Kylian Mbappe finally scored the first direct free-kick goal of his career during Real Madrid’s dramatic Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona — and in doing so, shut down a viral X account with over 200,000 followers.
The account, titled "Has Mbappe scored a free-kick", had gained huge traction on social media by posting daily updates highlighting Mbappe’s lack of free-kick goals. It amassed over 16 million impressions as fans followed the running joke since the Frenchman’s arrival in Madrid.
However, on Saturday night, the 2018 World Cup winner finally silenced the banter. Mbappe curled home a stunning free-kick to bring Real Madrid level against Barcelona in the final, breaking his long-standing duck in style.
Despite Mbappe’s landmark moment, it wasn’t enough for Los Blancos, as Barcelona mounted a late extra-time comeback to win 3-2, with Jules Kounde netting the decisive goal.
In a classy move, the owner of the viral account announced it would now either be sold or deactivated, posting: "Well, in any case, congratulations Mbappe, it was a fair fight!"
Mbappe’s next challenge:
With the Copa del Rey now out of reach, Real Madrid turn their full attention to the La Liga title race. Mbappe will be hoping his first season at the Bernabéu does not end trophyless, although Barcelona currently hold a four-point lead at the top of the standings with just a handful of games remaining.
