Real Madrid legend Marcelo names Lionel Messi as the toughest opponent he has ever faced, explaining why the Argentine caused more problems than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Marcelo has made a clear choice when asked about the toughest opponent of his career, placing Lionel Messi above his long-time teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former Real Madrid left-back shared his view during an interview with Brazilian legend Romario, where the question left no room for hesitation.
"You already faced Ronaldo, and you told me about Messi, who for you was the toughest," Romario said. "Messi," Marcelo replied without pause.
Why Messi stood out
Marcelo explained that Messi brought a level of unpredictability that made defending almost impossible.
"Messi was extraordinary. I am still looking for him to this day. Damn it. He was very extraordinary; Messi is a beast... Because he understands all the positions on the field very well."
"He knows when the guy is coming with the ball; he already knows where to go. Where to get out and such. I think he is very extraordinary."
A unique comparison with Ronaldo
The comparison carries weight given Marcelo’s close bond with Ronaldo.
The two shared the pitch 332 times for Real Madrid, forming one of the most effective partnerships in modern football.
Together, they won multiple trophies, including four Champions League titles.
Marcelo also faced Ronaldo in international matches, including a notable clash between Brazil and Portugal in 2008.
El Clasico battles shaped his view
Marcelo’s respect for Messi comes from years of direct battles in El Clasico.
As a key player for Real Madrid, he regularly faced the Argentine during one of football’s most intense rivalries.
During that period, Messi dominated the fixture, becoming the all-time top scorer in El Clasico with 26 goals.
For Marcelo, those encounters left no doubt about who was the most difficult opponent.
