Michael Olise became the first player to record seven assists at a single World Cup, but says France's failure to win the trophy overshadowed his historic achievement.

Bayern Munich star Michael Olise has admitted his record-breaking World Cup campaign ended in disappointment after France missed out on the trophy despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites.
The 24-year-old winger enjoyed the best international tournament of his career, registering seven assists, more than any player has ever produced at a single FIFA World Cup. Yet the historic milestone brought little comfort after France finished fourth following defeats to Spain and England in the closing stages of the competition.
Reflecting on the tournament in a heartfelt Instagram post, Olise admitted the pain of falling short outweighed any personal recognition.
"Not being able to take the trophy home is a huge disappointment. This is not how we had imagined the end of this World Cup at the beginning of the tournament."
Despite the heartbreak, the Bayern winger said representing France remained one of the greatest moments of his career.
"Wearing the French national team jersey at a World Cup has always been a dream come true for me, and it always will be. Even though we couldn't win the trophy, I'm proud to have set the record for the most assists in the history of a World Cup."
Olise admitted he would gladly trade the record for a winners' medal.
"Above all, I would much rather be here to say that we won the World Cup together, with my teammates, the staff, the coaches and all the fans of the French national team."
The attacking midfielder also paid tribute to former France coach Didier Deschamps, thanking him for believing in him throughout his international journey.
"I would also like to thank the national coach for first including me in the squad and for believing in me even in the most difficult moments. I will always be grateful to you and wish you all the best, whatever path you choose next."
Olise insisted France's ambitions remain unchanged despite the painful finish to the tournament.
"This remains the goal that will continue to drive us, and we hope that we can give you many more moments of joy and unforgettable memories in the future that you can share with us."
After completing his World Cup campaign, Olise has now begun an extended summer break before returning to Bayern Munich. Head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to build much of Bayern's attacking play around the French international as the German champions prepare for the new season.
Although France fell short of lifting the trophy, Olise leaves the tournament with his place in the record books secured. His seven assists established a new World Cup benchmark and confirmed his status as one of the game's most creative attacking players.
