Milan are reportedly exploring a move for David Alaba as the Austrian defender approaches the end of his Real Madrid contract.
AC Milan are reportedly preparing another ambitious move involving a Real Madrid star.
After strong links with Luka Modric, the Italian giants are now seriously considering a move for experienced Austrian defender David Alaba.
According to reports from Italy and Spain, Milan executives have already started discussions with influential agent Pini Zahavi regarding a possible free transfer.
Alaba’s current contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the season, which means he would arrive without a transfer fee.
Interestingly, Milan reportedly first contacted Zahavi to discuss the possibility of signing Robert Lewandowski.
However, the Polish striker’s salary demands were allegedly considered too expensive for the Rossoneri.
Milan now appear more focused on Alaba, who is viewed as a player capable of bringing leadership, experience and winning mentality to the dressing room.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri reportedly values the defender’s tactical versatility highly.
Alaba is capable of playing as a central defender, left-back and even in midfield when required.
Still, Milan remain cautious because of one major concern: injuries.
The Austrian international has struggled repeatedly with physical problems in recent seasons and has managed only 28 appearances across the last two campaigns.
That record reportedly raises serious doubts inside the club about whether the 34-year-old can still handle the demands of a full Serie A and European season.
Another obstacle is his enormous salary.
According to financial reports, Alaba currently earns around €22.5 million per year at Real Madrid.
Only Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior reportedly earn more inside the Madrid squad.
If Milan want to complete the transfer, major compromises on salary would almost certainly be necessary.
