Minnesota United is reportedly negotiating with James Rodríguez over a potential MLS move that would bring one of Colombia’s biggest stars to the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Minnesota United are in talks with James Rodríguez over a possible move that would take the Colombian star to Major League Soccer, according to The Athletic.
The 34-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Club León in Liga MX and has been without a club since December. If the deal goes through, Rodríguez would become the most high-profile global name ever to represent Minnesota United.
Despite his lack of recent club football, Rodríguez remains a key figure for the Colombia national team as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The midfielder earned widespread acclaim at the 2024 Copa América, held in the United States, where he was widely regarded as the tournament’s standout performer and helped Colombia reach the final against Argentina.
Rodríguez has not featured in a competitive match since November 2025, when he last appeared for Colombia. His most recent club spell came with León, where he recorded five goals and nine assists in 34 appearances across two Liga MX tournaments.
While León reached the playoffs during his first campaign, the second ended near the bottom of the table, leaving his time in Mexico as a mixed experience.
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2020, Rodríguez has had a nomadic career, playing for Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, and León.
With the new MLS season approaching and the World Cup looming, Minnesota United could offer the playmaker a fresh platform to regain rhythm and visibility. For the league, his arrival would rank among the most headline-grabbing signings in recent history.
